Celluloid Style: Mildred Pierce

Have you been watching Mildred Pierce? Wow. In a word: intense. Kate Winslet is (big surprise) devastating, although I’m starting to tire of her overly morose movie choices. The story chronicles the love/hate relationship between a mother and daughter, during and post the Depression era in Hollywood. The sets include a myriad of modest to grandiose abodes in LA and Pasadena, all of which are decorated in heavy upholstery, ornate wooden furniture, with dashes of paisley and floral printed accessories. It’s Depression era, West Coast chic, which can be fun in small doses.

Mildred is an excellent cook and baker, getting her start in this old-fashioned yellow kitchen. The cheery color palate of yellow and cream brightens the otherwise heavy-on-red theme through the series.

Are we in a Spanish palace? No, but it looks like it. Don’t you just love the mix of deep red and lime green? And palms are so great for interior spaces. Here’s how to get the look yourself:

1. Nearly Natural Palm Silk Tree
2. Vintage Oil Landscape
3. Schoolhouse Pendant
4. Concord Medallion Panel
5. Leksvik Buffet Top with Cabinet
6. After Hours Whiskey Set
7. Zebra Needlepoint Pillow
8. Monumental Belgium Red Velvet Sofa
9. Maison Round Table
