Berry Picking

I grew up with strawberries and blueberries in my back yard, and I am missing them these days. Where are the best places to go pick your own in Charlottesville?

For apples in the fall, Carter’s Mountain in my favorite!

Grelen nursery in Somerset has amazing raspberries, blueberries and blackberries to pick. This is their first year of bringing the public in to pick and it’s divine. You get to pick a huge bounty of the yummiest berries in an amazing setting.
Hope you get to go before the season is over!!

The Berry Patch, which is now closed for the season, is a great place to go. And a fraction of the price of Grelen. I got blueberries and raspberries there (and managed to get out there a few times!). For strawberries, I have gone to Chile’s and Critzer’s and recommend both. I also went to a new place over in the valley this year – Middle River Farms. I highly recommend them too. Worth the drive.

Emily, if you have the space, start a little patch in your yard or in pots! We started with 3 strawberry plants 4 years ago, and they have expanded to cover about 80 square feet. We also planted a blackberry twig 4 years ago that has grown by 10x and gives us gallons of berries each year. If you plant them this summer you’ll have handfuls of berries next year, and quadruple that the year after!
