Great Painter: David Hockney

In keeping with the British theme, I’m moving onto to Pop artist David Hockney. He’s been painting and making art since the 50’s, always evolving with the times. His newest thing: iPad paintings. For most of his life, he lived in California which inspired Hockney to make a series of paintings of swimming pools in Los Angeles, using acrylics and rendered in a highly realistic style. Of course, I gravitate towards the old school stuff, specifically his color pencil and chalk drawings. His subject matter is always life – portraits, still lives, landscapes. He painted his friends, his parents, himself, the flowers on the kitchen table in bright, saturated color, showing the third dimension in flattened planes. It’s fun stuff.

We met him once, this remarkable painter.
He attended a “Halston” wedding that Paul conducted at Grace Church,
and was carrying a wonderful walking stick with a duck at the end.
